IDW LogoIn the first issue of Colonized, zombies and aliens both showed up in the separatist zero-footprint community of Carbon Falls. With a lack of leadership and most of the town in mourning or fighting one another, the zombies were able to take out both an alien and a human resident. It’s this unlikely visit from another world that started it all and Chris Ryall and Drew Moss continue the story of aliens vs zombies vs humans in this second issue.

This issue picks up a couple of days after the initial zombie attack. A few townspeople fall prey to zombie cows before their fellow residents can rescue them. It’s then that some old-fashioned redneck justice is enacted and Colonized 2 Coverwe find, rather unsurprisingly, that many of the townspeople are distrustful of the aliens and plan on killing them along with the zombies. As the zombie horde grows, some mysteries are revealed in the town, which starts to heat things up.

Chris Ryall chose an extremely interesting setting for his zombie/alien invasion. As a separatist community, Carbon Falls is already isolated, making it a great setting for this book. Though I’m almost more interested in learning about the history of Carbon Falls and how it came to be, the dynamic of the characters makes the story worth the read. The conflict between Huxley and Randy Roy is a great one, and though Randy Roy is set up as the “bad guy”, it’s sometimes hard not to agree with how he handles the situation.

Drew Moss’ art is a perfect fit. It’s a nice mix of pulp style and some classic B-movie visuals. His mohawk-ed and mustachioed aliens are also hard not to love. His attention to details with the zombies, both human and otherwise, is fantastic. The hint of exposed muscles, injuries, and lifeless stares make the zombies just that much better.

All in all, it’s a great second issue in the series. It continues with the momentum from the first issue and helps introduce some more plot points that further develop the story. It’s a great combination of story and art that add to the series as a whole.  Pick up Colonized #2 from your Local Comic Store on May 1, 2013!
