Dynamite – April 2009 – $.25 – 12pgs – Color

Writer: Scott Beatty – Artist: Carlos Rafael – Cover: John Cassaday

Synopsis:  Background…Anthony “Buck” Rogers was transported 500 years into the future during a test flight of an experimental spacecraft.  This story begins with Buck fighting for Earth’s very existence against an armada of aliens called Ganymedians.  Things appear grim as the Ganymedian fleet far outnumber Earth’s protectors…until Buck steps in.  Thanks to Buck’s quick thinking it appears the threat is over, but only with Buck apparently sacrificing his own life.

Review:  I would say that this book only serves to give us a small taste of what’s to come, and doesn’t really do anything spectacular in my eyes.  There were a few “neat” little elements here and there such as explaining the thought boxes as telepathic entries into his “thought-journal,” and the image of Buck playing possum by drooling and looking “spaced out.”  I liked the look of the gadgets and the space suit, kind of reminds of the suits from that Tron movie.  I was, however, a bit disappointed with the non-complex green blobs that were the alien invaders.  I am happy that Dynamite has gotten ahold of this character as I understand they have been doing wonders with the Lone Ranger series.  I look forward to when the series really gets started with issue #1 in May!  If you haven’t picked this issue up you should…it’s only $.25 after all!
