Here’s a new feature we’ll try out. As you’ve probably surmised if you read the stashmycomics.com blog I have a penchant for writing in-depth reviews of comic books. Whenever a book has a significant impact on me, be it positive or negative I feel it is fair to the creators to outline my thoughts carefully in a review. However, I don’t always have a dissertation’s worth of thoughts on a comic. For these instances I will write short review capsules for multiple books without ratings. An overview of my reading experience. I will try to do this mostly for independent books which you may have missed but I’ll hit up DC and Marvel here and there as well.

So here we go:

Intrepids #1 – Image comics $2.99

Charming first issue mostly because of the art. Can’t say this first issue won me over but Intrepids could shape up to be a fun team book. It has a wild adventure tone with mind controlled attack bears, cyborg animals and secret agents with enhanced abilities. Part James Bond, part B-movie this book might appeal to fans of Hellboy, BPRD and Atomic Robo.

Green Lantern #63 – DC comics $2.99

Non-stop epic cosmic action. This is a prologue to the upcoming War of the Green Lanterns event. The extent of Krona’s evil obsession is revealed and the leaders of each colored corps must again work together to thwart him. Many reviewers have expressed fatigue at the relentless pace of this book but I have few complaints. I have never been a big fan of Ed Benes but didn’t mind his pencils too much in this issue. Check this book out if you’re curious about War of the Green Lanterns.

Carbon Grey #1 – Image comics $2.99

An ultra violent and uber-sexy dieselpunk samurai epic action tale of… Well, I’m not sure precisely what it’s about. This issue is jam-packed with character and plot setup. So much so that I was left scratching my head as to what exactly I had read. There’s no way of picking up every nuance and detail without re-reading and even at that some questions remain unanswered. But that’s just to keep you interested. Despite this apparent lack of narrative clarity upon first read I still enjoyed this book a great deal. The artwork, overall tone and idea of the book were so striking that I’m wanting to check out a few more issues of Carbon Grey. Fans of manga-inspired digital artwork – think if Adi Granov drew Final Fantasy characters, intense action, cinematic epics and political intrigue should seek out this book.

I can see myself writing in-depth reviews of this in the future as it promises to be a very dense story world.

That’s it for now friends, come back soon for more reviews and articles!
