                                                                       New Avengers #41

Marvel Comics- July, 2008 – $2.99 – 32pg. – Color

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis – Artist: Billy Tan – Cover: Aleksi Briclot

Bendis has surprisingly taken his time when it comes to writing tie-ins for Secret Invasion.  Mighty Avengers so far has been nothing but flashbacks and rewinds for both Nick Fury and The Sentry, while New Avengers has explained how the Skrulls formulated their plans on how to invade Earth.  His first tie-in straight from the core series seems surprisingly irrelevant compared to all his other tie-ins aside from one small revelation.  Before that, let’s get the low-down on the story.

The issue starts fresh from the pages of Secret Invasion #2, where a T-Rex barges in on the party between our heroes and the mysterious “fake” heroes.  After being thrown out of the huge brawl, the real Spider-man runs into our favorite Savage Land natives–Ka-zar and Shanna.  After a somewhat entertaining battle of wits between Spidey and the duo, we learn about what has happened to the Savage Land since we last saw them a while ago.

Months before even the Civil War began, Ka-Zar and Shanna stumbled across a vibranium mine that appears to be run by S.H.I.E.L.D.  After some investigation, they discover that the mine is actually being run by Skrulls impersonating S.H.I.E.LD agents.  Shanna then decides to disguise herself and infiltrate the mine to learn what the hell is going on.  However, she is soon discovered by the Skrulls and the two are soon on the run from the Skrulls.  After ditching their ride out, they soon form a militia with the natives to fight back, just then the events of “Breakout”(The first story arc of New Avengers) unfolds right in front of them.

Once the story is over, Spidey and Co. are soon attacked by the Captain America from the Skrull ship.  Oh boy.  ANOTHER out of place Captain America.  How many are in Marvel continuity right now?  Four?  Five?  I lost count.  Anyway, what do we now know about the Invasion.  Not much other than the mine from “Breakout” was run by Skrulls instead of rogue agents.  That’s it.  While he didn’t give himself much to run with, Bendis still made this book wasy and fun to read along the way.

At the least the story is neatly wrapped up with pencils from Billy Tan.  His panels flow ver smoothly while maintaining a good picture of what’s happening in front of the reader.  Add in some good colors and inking and this is a book that’s easy on the eyes.
