Green Lantern LogoIf you have been reading Green Lantern you know all about the different corpsmen and what the differences between them are. If you haven’t been following along, I wrote a quick summation of the different corps and what they represented, check it out and come back here. Now, since the beginning of the whole War of Light, not a lot was known about the Indigo Tribe. Since Green Lantern #7 kicks off The Secret of the Indigo Tribe, hopefully we can finally get some answers about this mysterious group. So, do we learn anything in this issue?

It’s just the first issue in the arc, but not much is revealed about the Indigo Tribe, except that for some reason they want Sinestro. The story starts with Hal and Carol together before being interrupted by Sinestro. Sinestro tells Hal that the Guardians are planning on replacing the Green Lantern Corps, this of course drives Hal into action. Suddenly the Indigo Tribe appear, overpower Sinestro, and teleport away with him and Jordan. Since the launch of this title, Carol’s station in the Star Sapphires hasn’t been addressed. During the fight between the Indigo Tribe and Hal and Sinestro, Carol couldn’t sit idle and retrieves her Sapphire ring and begrudgingly puts it on. The Guardians are also searching for the Book of the Black and are questioning Lyssa Drak about it’s whereabouts. And before the issue ends, Hal is confronted by Black Hand who tells him that they are “all saved.”

Green Lantern #7 Doug Mahnke CoverGeoff Johns continues to spin a riveting Green Lantern yarn. I like the evolution of Hal as character, him realizing he doesn’t need the GLC to exist is long overdue. One of the major complaints about Hal has been that he is a boring character. I don’t know if Johns is attempting to correct this, but the interactions between Jordan and other characters has been a lot more gripping than in past issues. If there’s one negative I have with Johns’ writing, it’s the need to end everything on a cliffhanger. But, I can’t fault him at all for it because he has to keep us coming back for more.

The pencils provided by Doug Mahnke are brilliant. He had a break from the last issue, and man is it good to have him back on the title. The amount of detail he brings to Green Lantern is amazing, lines are solid, faces look spot on, overall just a great job. I would be remiss not to include some love for Alex Sinclair. He is the colorist on the book and really helps the GL universe come alive. Visually this book has some of the best art I’ve seen of the new titles.

This series is heating up. The Guardians have turned into a bunch of, for lack of a better word, jerks. They want to replace the GLC and even discussed killing the Green Lantern who guards the sciencells. But, I have been curious about the Indigo Tribe since they debuted and I’m finally ready for some of their skeletons to be found. What is Indigo-1’s relationship with Abin Sur? Why is Abin’s name in the Indigo oath? What plans do they have for Black Hand, Sinestro, and Jordan? Hopefully all of these questions and more will be answered in the coming months.

If you don’t already pick up this series, do yourself a favor and jump on now. We’re gonna be in for a wild ride. Try and get the previous arc if possible as well. The interactions and dialogue between Hal and Sinestro make for good reading.
