Teen Wolf Review: Master Plan

Teen Wolf LogoIt’s the season finale, everyone. Scott, Isaac, Derek, and Peter team up to stop Gerard who’s big plan is finally revealed. And what’s the biggest surprise of the night? I’m not a sobbing mess at the end of it all.

This episode picks up right where the last one left off. Jackson is being rushed to the hospital after the incident on the lacrosse field. Turns out he’s not dead, thank God. At the hospital, Melissa notices Jackson is covered in some sort of cocoon (insert butterfly jokes here) and promptly calls Scott. Before the call from his mom, Scott and Isaac have teamed up with Derek and Peter to try and figure out how to stop Gerard. With Jackson’s latest development, Peter and Derek do some research and find out the Jackson is turning into a much larger and stronger version of the kanima which they believe to be part of Gerard’s plan.

Lydia and Stiles Teen WolfThe last episode ended with Stiles going missing. Turns out Gerard kidnapped him. He roughs him up a bit and sends him on his way. Later Lydia shows up at his house, upset that they won’t let her see Jackson, and needing to talk to someone. I love the moments between Lydia and Stiles because I so badly want them to be friends. I want them to have a genuine respect and platonic love for one another and this is definitely a step in the right direction. They get a text from Scott, informing them about Jackson, and Lydia wants to help. This sets Stiles off because this is dangerous and she could get hurt, but she doesn’t care. Stiles tell her that he couldn’t take it if she dies and that her death would affect everyone around her. I think this is so important because he’s not even talking about Lydia at this point. He’s talking about his mom. His mom died and left him and his dad behind to try to learn how to live without her. Stiles can’t go though that again. He can’t lose another person and have to learn how to live without them too. Urgh, my poor baby. I just want to make it all better for you. Lydia leaves, determined to help Jackson with or without Stiles’ help.

Teen Wolf GerardNow we finally find out what Gerard’s master plan is. He’s dying of cancer and to save himself, he plans to turn into a werewolf. It’s really dramatic when you watch it, but it feels almost anti-climatic. He had this huge elaborate plan just to get the bite, when he could have just asked an alpha (or forced one) to turn him? He’s from a family that hunts werewolves, so I can see why he wouldn’t just ask, but I feel like this whole thing was way too elaborate for something so simple.

Anyway, Scott drags a wounded Derek by the neck to oblige Gerard and forces Derek to give him the bite. Pretty horrible of him, right? But wait. The bite doesn’t take and he starts bleeding black. Scott had a master plan of his own. He switched Gerard’s pill with capsules filled with mountain ash, which effectively keeps anything supernatural at bay. You go, Scott. All is forgiven. The bite slowly starts to kill him, but Gerard doesn’t go down without a fight and commands the kanima to kill everyone.

Everyone’s geared for a fight, but Lydia steps in. She gives him the key, which, of course, is metaphorically the key to his heart. Is it cheesy? A little bit. I’m still crying anyway. Jackson slowly turns back into a human. But Jackson knows it won’t last long. He steps back, allowing Derek and Peter to kill him. This moment is so crucial to Jackson’s character development. Jackson was always someone very self-centered and to see him willing to sacrifice himself for the safety of his friends shows just how much he’s grown as a character. Lydia rushes over and tell him that she still loves him. I’m weeping. Their love will never die. Jackson and Lydia forever. But Jackson doesn’t stay down for long. He gets up and he’s now a werewolf! He finally got what he’s always wanted. I’m so happy for him. I’m crying with happiness for once.

Teen Wolf JacksonLater Allison apologizes to Scott for what she did. Scott understands and forgives her. While I understand why she did what she did, that doesn’t make it any less terrible. Hopefully there will be some tension over this next season, because I can’t see how anyone could totally forgive her just like that. They decide it’s best if they break up for awhile. I couldn’t agree more. They need some time apart. Like a year or two.

Things to think about for season 3. Gerard somehow escaped while everyone dealt with Jackson, but Dr. Deaton and Ms. Morrell are on his trail. Is Gerard still going to be a treat? And what’s the story behind Deaton and Morrell? Is there a plan up Peter’s sleeve? Also, we’re introduced to next season’s enemy. Derek’s ascension to alpha status has attracted a pack of alphas. What do they want? We’ll find out in 2013.

Is it bad that when I saw the picture of Gerard I immediately thought that’s what you would have looked like if Stiles died?

I agree 100% regarding Allison; I don’t see how Scott can completely forgive her. Though her grandfather had much to do with her transformation; she must have known a lot of what she did was wrong. I loved this season, but I work late at Dish, so I was never home when episodes premiered. So, I used my Hopper to record all of the episodes, as to not miss anything. I loved that I could watch everything commercial free, and I still had 2,000 hours of recording space for other programs. I’m not sure what the next season will entail, but I’m sure not everyone will be quite as understanding of Allison’s actions.

@JasonMartin That sad thing is I would look a lot worse. Think corpse-like.
