The 5 “New 52” Books I Most Hope Will Be Good

So we’ve read the previews, heard the initial buzz and placed our bets. By now we have an idea of what the good books will be. But there is still a fog of war covering much of this relaunch. Faced with that, one only has hope. Here are the 5 books from this relaunch I most hope will be good.

#5 Wonder Woman:
Everything Azzarello or artist Cliff Chiang has said about their take on this book is a win for me – except for the panties, Diana needs pants. Azzarello said this was a horror book. Weird, I dig it. Chiang says the they’ve modernized the gods. Good! Bye bye togas. Brian says he’s gonna make her a true part of the DC Trinity dammit! I say it’s about time dammit! Go team Themyscira!

#4 Men of War: Ivan Brandon caught my eye with his breakout series Viking a few years ago. Though that story somewhat lost its footing after a few issues, the idea was very strong and had verve. Brandon’s written lots of other things since and one expects he’s gotten better. In the art department, Tom Derenick and Phil Winslade are certainly something to get hyped up about. Call me crazy but I really want to collect a good series with great cover art. I love it when good covers are backed up by good story!

#3 Suicide Squad: I’m very excited about this series because … Shark. Listen, I know it’s reductive to say this but I very much want a series that’s just stupid insane fun with a Shark Man in it. And Suicide Squad has a Shark Man in it. I think the only way to make me more interested in this is if the book was called Suicide Shark. Admittedly there’s more to it than just a Shark Man. Harley is an interesting character. The idea of her leading a team or villains (with a Shark Man) on suicide missions is very appealing to me. I can really sink my teeth in that concept *zing!*

#2 Supergirl: I have a soft spot for this character ever since I read comics within which Infantino drew her. It may seem silly, but I hope this series is good to continue fill out my Supergirl collection. The preview art is magnificent! I don’t anything about Micheal Greene though so I’m going in with an open mind.

#1 Deathstroke: The single most coolest thing that came out of Flashpoint was Grodd. But we’re not getting a Grodd series so the next coolest thing is Deathstroke. At SDCC writer Kyle Higgins promised Deathstroke was going to be structured as a series of one-shots. I’ve been hankering for this. I think that form is something that mostly died with Bronze Age and the superhero genre has suffered because of it. Here’s hoping Kyle will make good on that promise of his. On the art side, I know of Joe Benett and Art Thibert peripherally but I don’t personally have much experience with them. The names have a good reputation so my hopes are up.

Some of these might be great! Some not. Who knows? I’m looking forward to finding out!

What books do you most hope will be good?

Deathstroke and Wonder Woman, for all the reasons listed above.

I really enjoyed the Frankenstein tie-in and am looking forward to continuing that series.

I’m very interested in DC Universe Presents, if it successfully becomes a place to feature some characters who have good stories to tell, but might not have the strength to carry their own series.

Speaking of, I’m rooting for Mr Terrific to hold onto his solo title for awhile. I’m naturally inclined to support any JSAer, but there are a few storylines featuring him that I really enjoyed, specifically the Fourth Reich arc in #36-40, and the way he dealt with his troubles in #52.

I’m really gunning for Green Arrow to do well. I’ve always wanted to see him in a HOT DC series. If he’s written right, he’ll be in just that. I’m also keeping my eye on Suicide Squad, though not for the reasons you are Jason, lol! I think it’s a great concept, and I hope DC does equally, if not better, than Marvel with Thunderbolts.

Things don’t bode well for GA Tim. Early buzz is that it’s not being well recieved.

Well, as I have read the 1st three (Animal Man, OMAC, and JLI), I guess I hope Batwoman is great! These are the titles I am limiting myself to. The first 3 were great by the way with Animal Man being an absolute killer standout!
