rosario dawson at comic conCelebs enjoy comics now. In fact, it’s considered kind of cool. Sometimes actors will feign an interest in comics to position their careers in the superhero action genre and comic book adaptation market. But there are some famous people out there whose love for comics and geek culture is genuine. Somehow, you can just tell. Theit knowledge of our realm isn’t superficial, their references aren’t passing. They mean it and you can tell. Here are a few of those people who have “real” geek cred.

Patton Oswalt
#6 Patton Oswalt. Comedian Patton Oswalt not only is a fan of comics, he’s made a career out of being an ambassador of geekdom. COnstantly weaving geek culture into his act, Patton’s passion for pop culture is obvious and contagious. Though he loses points lately for having some rather uncharacteristic and borderline curmudgeonly attitudes towards the culture he’s loved so much.

Samuel L. Jackson
#5: Samuel L. Jackson is known as a collector of vintage comics. His enthusiasm for superheros is great enough that he has geared his career towards playing in more superhero movies for the sheer fun of it. He often makes appearances at comic conventions and comes across as an un-ironic fan of all things comics.

Brian Posehn
#4: Brian Posehn. Comedian Brian Posehn is not only a fan of comics, he’s also a creator himself. He collaborated with no less than Hilary Barta and Rick Remender on the Image comic “Last Christmas” in which a post-apocalyptic Santa turns his back on Christmas. Brian’s love of comics is genuine and he too sometimes weaves this hobby into his act.

#3: Rosario Dawon. Though it seems every other celebrity has a comic book to their name these days, Rosario Dawson has come across as a genuine nerd with hard-core geek cred. Well-known for her gritty role in the Frank Miller adaptation Sin City she also did a bang-up job as the voice of Artemis in the Wonder Woman animated feature and can talk geek with the best of ’em.

Scott Aukerman and Paul F. Tompkins
#2 is a tie: Scott Aukerman, host of the Comedy Bang Bang podcast and Paul F. Tompkast host of the Pod F. Tompkast are both fans of comics. They sometimes will make obscure references to silver age comics in their podcast which go straight over the heads of their guests. You can really tell someone’s into comics when they do several minutes of comedy about Uatu the Watcher and then tell the listeners to google Uatu the Watcher if they don’t know what that is. They may not be famous on the Samuel L. Jackson level but they are pretty hilarious guys who love comics.

Jonathan Ross
#1 British talk show host Jonathan Ross has often talked comics on his show when he has guests who have been in comic book movies. But the true measure of his passion is in his documentary called “In Search of Steve Ditko” wherein he sets out on a personal quest to learn more about the reclusive Ditko. That documentary is available in its entirety here. Ross’ passion for the medium is contagious in this documentary.

There’s lots of others. Which ones did I forget?

Nicolas Cage is the first one to come to mind. From my understanding, he has one of the larger private collections in the country. Another one I’m pretty sure is a huge collector is John Lequizamo. I’m pretty sure he’s a huge Spider-Man fan! Great article Jason. Good to see we got some pretty cool reps in Hollywood!

Is Quentin Tarantino? That rings a bell. Also, I know Bill Hader and Seth Myers from SNL are. Their love of comics gAve them an opportunity to write a Spider-man comic, Spider-man: the short Halloween! It’s hilarious…I own it.

Kevin Smith and Nic cage should have been the top two people in this list. They have talked about their collections for years. Sam L. Jackson just start when Unbreakable came out and that is when he went public.
