This is a solid read but it is BRUTAL. Indeed, no character is safe. The last story arc is the second most heinous of the lot, but scarcely so. I wonder what's wrong with Kirkman but then I have to wonder what's wrong with all of us readers that we keep turning the pages. Is it a deep naïveté that we hope somehow things will get better? When a five-issue arc only has a few deaths, murders, and amputations, it feels like a calm arc, which is indeed how the title describes what happens before the storm that will rip your guts out at least three times over. The biters truly are not what's the worst in this world. As much as I kind of hate to say this, bring on the next compendium--I wanna know what happens to the handful of survivors.
Really hard to say anything bad about this book. It collects the first 48 issues of The Walking Dead series, everything from Rick waking up to the end of the prison story line. No character is safe, and the compendium is a real page turner. Quite possibly the best trade paperback that I own. The price is just a bit steep, but at the same time, it is the most affordable way by far to read the first forty eight issues.
