On a first read through you can tell why the series got cancelled so soon, and Men of War remains one of the weakest New 52 titles. However this is a good example of an issue getting better when you give it a second or third try. The battleground realism isn't so awkward anymore and more of the subtle comic book fantasy becomes noticible.
