This is kind of a hard review to give. If I was reviewing it when it first came out in 2011, I'd probably rate it higher, but in retrospect it doesn't look as good. The biggest negative is Capullo's artwork, which isn't as good as his later work on "Batman". The art here is prototypical of what it will be later. It's the same as when a pilot episode of a favorite TV show isn't as good in quality as later episodes. The designs of various characters depicted here will change drastically in later issues. The story itself in kind of a warm up from the real story later as well. But even with these marks against it, it's style Snyder/Capullo Batman and gets a fairly good rating from me.
A bit of a slow start considering it's setting up the whole Court of Owls plot, which is a fantastic story. Incredible artwork by Greg Capullo!
Well rounded 1st issue. Really, this had everything! Loved seeing Harvey. Bruce actually getting some face time was a first for me in awhile!
I really enjoyed this book, the writting kept the story going at a good pace and the art work is really nice. The book leaves you hanging and wanting to read the next issue.
"Gotham is a mystery." That, right there, sold me on this issue. The ending was definitely a suprise! This is, all in all, a great story. Action packed in the beginning, and very well paced thoughout. Greg Capullo does amazing work with the pencils and Scott Snyder has hit the ground running with the story. I like that it not only focused on Batman, but who Batman is: Bruce Wayne. A fair amount of the story was dedicated to the alter ego. Very interested to read #2!
I can't wait to see how this story plays out.
