Batman manages to get an old recording of his teacher Mr Winchester, whom he knows is also Mr Whisper. Voice analysis suggests he is Austrian. A mix up leads him to hear an old recording of his father reading a book about Lake Dess. He trusts the odd coincidence and goes to Lake Dess. The abbot at the monastery there tells him about the previous monastery in the 17th century. A pious monk named Manfred turned to evil and led his fellow monks into devil worship and debauchery and they terrorised a group of visiting nuns. After being struck by plague, Manfred pledged his soul to the devil in return for safety and immortality for 300 years. The monastery was eventually flooded after a dam burst, but Manfred was said to have escaped. The monastery is apparently haunted by a nun Manfred had burnt alive. Batman visits the monastery, and using the clues from his dreams, finds a secret document - blueprints for Gotham Cathedral.
