What carries this book most, in one of my most disliked storylines, is Javier Rodriguez's colors over Brad Walker's pencils. The pencils are tight and detailed in a way that pop with Rodriguez's fantastic colors. I don't use the phrase "graphic novel" in that highbrow sort of way, but the look of this issue, because of the atmosphere and style created by the use of colors, feels like a European graphic novel album or like one of the higher quality Heavy Metal stories by Enki Bilal or one of those other great artists. War Games ran concurrent with Identity Crisis, which is about when DC began to do its dark plunge with what I guess are some postmodern realist attempts that blighted the Batman in a way I still have trouble stomaching. Ugh.
