Green Arrow #62

Crawling Through the Wreckage, Part 3: An Eye for an Eye
DC Comics – July, 2006 – $2.99 – Color
Writer: Judd Winick – Art: Scott McDaniel – Cover: Scott McDaniel

Ollie is now mayor of Star City after time-jump one year forward. He has been gone for most of it. Supervillain Brick has been keeping the justice with his own unique way: killing all the thugs that threaten “his” city. Now that Ollie is back, he sends Brick a message: “Nice work, but stop killing them.” People don’t quite like how he is handling his duties as mayor, so Deathstroke is hired to kill him. That bring us through the first two issues of the arc, and this one picks up just as Ollie comes back to his office to find Deathstroke.

Deathstroke shoots GA with a dart containing a nerv toxin, which should paralyze him. However, he seems to be fine and has a trap setup: a bomb under his desk. He sets this off and magically has his costume on in the next panel. He then shoots DS in the arm. The issue is narrated by DS, who can’t understand why he was wearing body armor, or how he knew he was coming. They fight a bit more, then GA unleashes another trap: a giant sticky arrow on a rope. It hits DS in the chest and pulls him out the window into a large pit of glue. More narration by DS reveals that not only did GA know he was coming, he basically lured him there, and step by step has played him. He figured that must be where GA was all year: getting better! Just when DS knows he can’t win this fight, he flashblinds Ollie and gets ready to run, but a large group of armed men stands at the top of the pit, guns trained on DS. Ollie gets right up into his face and declares, “You’re Under Arrest!”

This series is amazing. I know nothing of the events in the main DCU, and this series just doesn’t care. Great for a one-time DC reader. Instead of having to pick up 52 to learn about GA during the one year jump, it can be summed up in three panels. Bravo, and I daresay Marvel wouldn’t let me get off so easy, so thanks for that, DC. I still think you suck overall, but congrats on that.
