Ultimate Spider-Man Animated Series Trailer

Marvel launched an extended trailer for their newest Disney XD animated series, “Ultimate Spider-Man”, which seems to be only loosely based on the comic of the same name. Top-shelf names such as Brian Bendis and Paul Dini share some of the production credit on this one, and this trailer gives us what seems to be BTAS-style theatrics with Bendis dialogue. The gist of it: Nick Fury (the Sam Jackson version, not the David Hasslehoff version) has decided that Spider-Man on his own is kind of a screw-up, so he recruits him into S.H.I.E.L.D. to turn him into the “Ultimate” Spider-Man. The trailer gives us sneak-peeks of all the Bond/Batman swag Spidey gets his hand on his new role, including a web-shooting motorcycle and the “Civil War” era Tony Stark designed Spider-Armor, as well as a Spidey/Iron Man smackdown. Purists may balk, but remember: this is on Disney XD, which last I checked was a station aimed primarily at kids and pre-teens, and this is some old-school TMNT style Spidey that would have been on permanent lock on my Saturday morning remote back in the day. Also, since we’ve seen Spidey’s origin story retold about a zillion times over the past decade (and we’re gonna get another retelling this summer from the Facebook movie dude) I have to say I appreciate a completely new spin on a “Spider-Man” series that goes in a new direction without taking things to the misguided lengths of “Spider-Man Unlimited”. (Remember that? Uggh.)

“Ultimate Spider-Man” premieres on April 1st at 11am/10c inside Marvel Universe on Disney XD! Check out the trailer here:

It looks awesome, but reminds me soooo much of Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans. It just has that type of feel to it. I’d watch it though!
