Alterna Comics LogoFrom the twisted mind of Sean Von Gorman and with the help of Alterna Comics, comes Sock It To Me Comics. Ever the funny guy, Sean, the artist of Alterna’s Secret Adventures of Houdini, flexes his  comedy muscles as he collects several short stories centered on an amoral, anthropomorphic sock puppet and what appears to be Sean himself in a digital comic available on comiXology. In addition to all that, the book features pinups from other artists and several pinups from Von Gorman himself.

With a cover spoofing Action Comics #1Sock It To Me immediately leads with humor. The first short tells the reader of Sock’s secret origins, at least that’s how it goes according to Sock. Then, Sock is forced to get a job and meets God. Seriously. After that, Sock’s evil twin Lefty enters the scene, only to be taken out quickly. In the final story, Sock and Sean have a long night drinking which ends in unspeakable things.

Sock It To Me Comics #1 CoverSean Von Gorman is honestly one of the strangest, craziest, funniest comic creators to follow on Twitter, and it’s great to see that aspect of him show up in Sock It To Me. The relatively short length of the various stories allow for Sean to keep things simple, but also let him put quite a few jokes in there. The often unexpected turns that the situations take only makes the jokes and the entire book even more enjoyable. While Von Gorman may be overstating things on the cover, saying the book is “The most important comic since ever”, it’s certainly an enjoyable one, and for just $1.99.

The art is simpler than Von Gorman’s work on Secret Adventures of Houdini, but it’s perfect for the nature of the stories. The cartoonish nature of the art is great for getting across the emotions of the characters and the jokes in each story. Even with the many good lines and great jokes, a crowned, robot God is still likely the standout image from this comic. Because every comic needs more robot deities.

For just two bucks, there’s not much of an excuse to not read Sock It To Me. Sean Von Gorman is a mad genius, and his strange sense of humor makes this comic wholly enjoyable. While the black and white art might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it works for these stories, but it would always be nice to see Sock and Sean in color. Be sure to buy the issue on comiXology and read it on your computer or favorite digital device.

Art: 9/10
